Sailing Program

Sailing at HMC

Enjoy the peace and quiet of Hingham Harbor while you and your children learn to sail. Our programs provide instruction from beginner to race. Sailing is a wonderful lifelong sport that you can enjoy alone or share with family and friends. Classes are taught by experienced instructors in a safe, fun-filled, hands-on format.

2019 sailing program registration will open in March, 2019. If you have questions about the program, please email:

Youth Classes (7-18)

Our junior program starts at age 7 and is offered to children and youth up to age 18. We have a range of different levels and classes from complete beginners to racing classes that offer participation on the local regatta circuits. Many of our sailors go on to sail in high school and beyond and HMC is one of the  oldest and well established community sailing programs in Massachusetts. Please note, in order to participate in our youth sailing programs, children must pass a swim test in order to demonstrate that they are capable swimmers.

Adult Classes

Our adult program caters to beginner sailors, returning sailors and advanced sailors alike. Adult sailing primarily takes place in our Laser, 420 and Rhodes 19 fleet and our classes and programs are available to all. HMC typically offers eight weekly sailing classes during the summer (Tuesday evenings or Saturday mornings). Private lessons-both individual and group-can be arranged outside of these times.

Recreational Sailing

This is a time set aside for registered sailing students and their families to enjoy our boats and test the skills they have acquired at Hingham Maritime Center. ‘Open Sail’ is available to those youth and adults who meet our independent boating criteria. Open sailing is included in your registration for a sailing class or you may register for it as a stand-alone option if you are an experienced sailor who passes our independent sailing criteria.

Recreational sailing is offered Monday and Wednesday nights 5:30-8:00pm.
